ライアン三姉妹について、
ライアン三姉妹のご両親は米国人で、3人はともに日本で生まれました。長女のカイラさんは小学３年のときに三味線の音色にひかれ演奏を始めました。姉にならって、ブレナさんと小学３年の三女シャナさんも三味線を始めました。津軽三味線の全国大会でも上位入賞をしており、地元山形ではライアン３姉妹としてよく知られた存在です。
ライアン3姉妹への異文化交流イベント等での演奏依頼がますます増えてきている。津軽三味線全国大会には毎年参加し、姉妹のうちの上の二人は、2007年と2008年と2009年の大会で、決勝トーナメントにまで残る成績をおさめたが、参加した年齢枠では、初めての外国人演奏者の決勝進出となった。当初は、日本文化への架け橋となることを目的として始めた三味線だが、最近では、外国人の立場から、日本の人々に日本の伝統音楽に対する関心や誇りを抱くきっかけを与えるという自分たちの新たな役割を自覚するようになってきている。
ライアン３姉妹は、これまで多数の文化交流イベントやフェスティバルにおいて三味線を演奏し、高齢者介護施設等においてもボランティアとして定期演奏会を開いている。演奏する機会には、日本の着物を着用するのが通常である。各種のテレビ番組や新聞記事（日本語・英語）で取り上げられたことも多く、NHKの番組では、津軽三味線を演奏する3人の姿が全国に放送された。2007年には、日中文化・スポーツ交流３０周年記念のイベントで、日本代表の１グループとして、中国の上海に派遣され演奏を行った。さらに、アメリカ大使館では、諸外国の大使たちを前に演奏し、また、2008年年３月には、日米協会主催のチャリティーイベントにおいて、多くの国会議員や元海外駐在大使らを前に演奏した。2008年7月に東京で開催されたアジア子ども文化交流イベントには、日本代表の1グループとして参加した。2008年の6月には、ゼネラル・エレクトリック社からの依頼で、東京六本木ヒルズにて、世界各国のゼネラル・エレクトリック社の経営陣が集まる年に一度の記念イベントで演奏を行った。

About The Ryan Sisters,
The Ryan Sisters are three blue-eyed all American girls who were born in Japan. Because they attend regular Japanese schools, they are bilingual in Japanese and English. The older two sisters have won numerous national tsugaru shamisen competition awards and perform regularly all over Japan.
The sisters can provide a bridge between Japanese traditional music and culture and other countries using their background, language and musical ability.
They have performed at many cultural exchange events festivals and volunteer regularly to play at retirement homes. They perform regularly wearing Kimono. The sisters have appeared on various TV shows in Japan and have been profiled in the Japanese and English newspapers numerous times. They were broadcasted live nationally on NHK playing the tsugaru shamisen. In 2007, they traveled to Shanghai, China as part of a group representing Japan at the Japan-China 30th Anniversary of cultural ties. They have also played at the American Embassy in front of various countries ambassadors. In March 2008, they played for a charity fundraising event for the Japan-US Society in front of Japanese Diet members and ex-ambassadors in Tokyo. Also in 2008, they were asked to perform at Roppongi Hills, Tokyo by General Electric Corp. for an annual event for the top GE managers around the world.
The three sisters have gradually become busier with performance requests – especially for cross-cultural events. They participate in Tsugaru Shamisen National Competitions regularly and the older two have placed in the finals in 2007, 2008 and 2009. They are the first non-Japanese to place in the finals for their age groups.
The sisters started out to build a bridge to Japanese culture but soon discovered that they also create interest and pride in traditional Japanese culture and music to Japanese people. Because it often takes an outsider to make people realize the value of their own cultural traditions, The Ryan Sisters hope to gain support from those interested in this music genre and become a professional group in the future.
